About This Position


Ideal Vacuum is seeking a senior engineer to work on the product development of mechanical scroll and multi-stage blower type vacuum pumps. They are called "dry pumps" because they do not use vacuum pump oil to seal the pumping stages. Being dry, they operate on a non-contact design, where high-speed rotors are mounted very close to stationary stators, this is in some ways like a turbo or supercharger in a performance sports car. The fast-rotating speed and close tolerance keeps airflow moving forward while limiting backwards migration of gases. A key technical challenge is to correctly address thermal expansion, to maintain the close tolerances between fix and moving components. Elegant and innovative designs are needed, which will correctly manage thermal expansion caused by the heat generated as the gases are compressed in the vacuum generating process; while simultaneously preventing component contact which would cause the pump to seize.

This Senior Mechanical Engineer will lead the Product Development team to design, analyze, test, and validate these new vacuum pumps through the full Product Life Cycle, from concept, the initial sale, to product service. This will involve developing and implementing innovative solutions, leading the product development process, and delivering these projects on time.



Primary Job Responsibilities


  • Deliver innovative ideas by examining alternate techniques/approaches and provide intellectual property.
  • Design parts and assemblies, create 3D solid models using SolidWorks, and 2D drawing prints for manufacturing.
  • Develop pump components, such as rotors, stators, scrolls, shafts, valves, electric motor mounting components, to deliver performance, reliability, and the margin of safety.
  • Leverage various statistical techniques, and predictive modeling to identify and drive design improvements.
  • Collaborate with our CNC machining department to manufacture prototype parts.
  • Operate in-house tools for design validation, including CMM.
  • Design and make custom assembly fixtures and tooling.
  • Conduct laboratory testing, prepare a written report of the results, and use those results to refine the design.
  • Collect and analyze data to identify trends and relationships.
  • Interpret design specifications and support concept, design, documentation, fatigue analysis, fabrication and testing of pumps.
  • Lead evaluation of pump designs for structural integrity, such as vibration and thermal heat management analysis.
  • Collaborate with documentation team to create assembly instructions along with the user's operating manual.
  • Give PowerPoint presentations on the research results to other engineers and managers.
  • Assist production team.
  • Conduct failure mode analysis and troubleshooting of product life cycle.
  • Support various types of cost management and improvement activities.
  • Lead the design team to create attractive product packaging, using a variety of cast metal and injection molded plastic cover components, which would be popular with our customers, and support the look of our Ideal Vacuum brand.


Qualifications We Desire


  • Professional experience designing and developing production mechanical products.
  • Experience working with suppliers and machine shops to fabricate parts and components.
  • Experience performing mechanical testing (e.g., vibrational and thermal analysis, etc.)
  • Working knowledge of manufacturing processes associated with precision metal parts (e.g., CNC machining, gaging, CMM based inspection).
  • Proficiency with SolidWorks CAD Software.
  • Proficiency with Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) as well as tolerance analysis methods.
  • Proficiency with mechanical modeling analysis tools (e.g., FEA software).
  • Familiarity with material characterization techniques.
  • Proven ability to interact well with diverse teams.
  • Excellent communication skills including the ability to prepare clearly written reports and deliver well-articulated briefings.
  • Genuine technical curiosity, and an interest and aptitude for learning more.
  • Strong commitment to quality, safety, collaboration, and teamwork.


Education/Experience


Minimum Requirements:
  • Bachelor’s in Engineering, Engineering Technology, Chemistry, Physics, or Computer Science
  • At least 12 years of experience in product design/development or new technologies and/or computer science experience
  • At least 2 years of experience leading new technologies or specialized technologies

OR

  • Master’s in Engineering, Engineering Technology, Chemistry, Physics, or Computer Science
  • At least 8 years of experience in product design/development or new technologies and/or computer science experience
  • At least 2 years of experience leading new technologies or specialized technologies

OR

  • PhD in Engineering, Engineering Technology, Chemistry, Physics, or Computer Science
  • At least 5 years of experience in product design/development or new technologies or specialized technologies and/or computer science experience
  • At least 2 years of experience leading new technologies or specialized technologies
