Many laboratories and industries produce delicate samples or products that must be stored under vacuum to prevent degradations. These samples are often highly reactive and tiny amounts of powdered or vaporized sample can easily damage vacuum equipment. Vacuum chambers are also used to process volatile chemical samples such as in epoxy resin and monomer curing and outgassing. They are often used in post-cure, heat-treatment, and bakeout finishing of products to remove residual chemicals and strengthen products in the absence of air. Often, during these processes organic and sometimes corrosive chemicals are released. Many pharmaceutical products are freeze dried as a purification method, to reduce weight, and increase solubility. These products are sometimes suspended in highly polar organic liquids such as such as acetic acid (AcOH) trifluoroacetic acid (TFA), and alcohols. In environmental testing, sometimes acid atmosphere or ozone is introduced into the chamber to test component durability in extreme atmosphere conditions. In these situations, a chemically resistant vacuum chamber with chemical-series oil-free pumps is required. This Corrosive Chemical Tolerant ExploraVAC MAX system can be upgraded with an internally regulated purge gas line to introduce a user-selected gas into the vacuum chamber. Chemically resistant turbomolecular pumps are also available. If you are unsure about the chemical or material requirements for your specific process or application, please contact our engineering team for assistance. The ExploraVAC MAX series of TVAC thermal vacuum chamber process and test instruments create precise environments empowering the operator with complete control over internal chamber pressure and temperature. Sample Applications Environmental Testing Chamber Altitude Test Chamber Space Simulation Test Chamber Thermal Shock Chamber Aerospace & Aeronautical Engineering Test Chamber High Altitude Flight Component Testing Vacuum Oven Vacuum Freeze Drying Plastic & Epoxy Curing & Outgassing About Altitude Simulation: Many industries need to design, test, and validate parts, components, and electronics that can operate under variable pressure or rapid pressure swings. Aerospace and aeronautical engineers must design components that can handle takeoff, landing, and cruising at high altitude for both continuous use in commercial aircraft and extreme stress in military or acrobatic aircraft. Many aircraft components must be able to survive emergency situations such as rapid decompression at altitude inside a pressurized cabin or compartment, rapid pressurization as the aircraft takes an unexpected dive, or rapidly changing and differential pressures found in storm systems. The automotive industry must make cars that can drive at any livable altitude, from below sea level to 19,300 feet of elevation. Medical respirators and other devices must perform at ground level and in life-flight airplanes and helicopters. Even consumer electronics, such as cell phones and laptop computers, must be able to handle being placed in an unregulated cargo bay during a trans-oceanic passenger flight. It is very difficult and expensive to test components at true altitude, especially if the altitude must rapidly change. It is often better to use an altitude simulation chamber with a controlled interior pressure. Ideal Vacuum’s ExploraVAC MAX Altitude Simulation Test Chambers deliver precise pressure and altitude control with ramp rates and setpoint control accurate to the built-in gauge value. The preconfigured Altitude Simulation ExploraVAC MAX model has a chamber pressurization rate of 10 Torr per second, which is faster pressurization than an object feels at terminal-velocity free-fall in the earth’s atmosphere, sufficient for most ASTM and MIL-STD rapid pressurization standards. It also has a maximum simulate rate of rise of 22,500 feet per minute, sufficient for commercial aircraft flight simulations. Smaller chamber sizes and/or greater pumping speeds are available to meet MIL-STD-810-G rapid decompression standards or to simulate military aircraft or rocket takeoff. Explosive decompression testing apparatus are also available upon request.

Sample Applications Environmental Testing Chamber Altitude Test Chamber Space Simulation Test Chamber Thermal Shock Chamber Aerospace & Aeronautical Engineering Test Chamber High Altitude Flight Component Testing Vacuum Oven Vacuum Freeze Drying Plastic & Epoxy Curing & Outgassing About Epoxy Outgassing and Curing: To make quality, high-strength epoxy or polyurethane castings and moldings, all trapped air bubbles and dissolved gases must be removed. This improves the strength, texture, and clarity of the final product. Vacuum treating liquid resin is one of the best ways to remove bubbles and the only way to remove dissolved gasses by causing them to expand and rise to the surface where they are stripped away by the vacuum pump. Vacuum is especially important when dealing with oxygen sensitive monomer mixtures, such as acrylics and other free-radical polymerization polymers, or water sensitive resins, such as polyurethane resin. Mild heating and temperature control of the liquid resin also contributes to reliable quality casts and molds. Heating a thick, viscous, slow-curing resin will reduce its viscosity allowing trapped bubbles to more easily be removed by vacuum. Free radical polymerization type polymers often require heating to initiate or complete the polymerization process, while other two-part polymer or epoxy mixtures may cure faster or more completely when heated. Heating in vacuum can also be used as a post-cure process to outgas and remove any unreacted monomer, catalyst, surfactant, plasticizer, hardener, or other organic chemicals. This can further improve the strength and rigidity of plastic parts and is essential in high purity applications where residual monomer and catalyst leaching or outgassing is prohibited. Ideal Vacuum’s ExploraVAC MAX Epoxy Outgassing and Curing TVAC thermal vacuum chamber system comes with an oil-free, chemically resistant dry scroll vacuum pump capable providing vacuum pressures as low as 2 × 10-2 Torr while withstanding organic vapors and avoiding contaminating liquid resin with oil mist. It is equipped with a thermally isolated, heated platen that allows sample temperature ramp rate and setpoint control from ambient temperature to 400°C, with ± 0.3°C accuracy, which far exceeds most process specifications. The ExploraVAC MAX Epoxy Outgassing and Curing TVAC thermal vacuum chamber system can be customized with full range pressure control to allow precise control of vacuum levels to remove bubbles, dissolved gases, and water without evaporating or boiling volatile monomer mixtures. An internally regulated purge gas line can also be added to introduce a user-selected inert, oxygen-free, or water-free gas for extra sensitive processes. The system can be further customized with a variety of platen cooling options if rapid thermal quenching is required.

The lower pressure reduces the boiling point of the undesired solvent, allowing it to be removed from the desired product with only mild warming. The lower temperatures and absence of oxygen prevent product degradation and oxidation, ensuring high quality output. Vacuum ovens are also used in the plastic, rubber, and paper industries to remove dissolved and trapped gases, cure and crosslink resins, and heat treat cured products to outgas residual monomer and increase strength and rigidity. Vacuum treating liquid resin is one of the best ways to remove bubbles and the only way to remove dissolved gasses by causing them to expand and rise to the surface where they are stripped away by the vacuum pump. Free radical polymerization requires heating to initiate or complete the polymerization process, while two-part polymer or epoxy mixtures may cure faster or more completely when heated. Heating in vacuum can also be used as a post-cure process to outgas and remove any unreacted monomer, catalyst, surfactant, plasticizer, hardener, or other organic chemicals. All these processes contribute improving the strength, texture, purity, and clarity of the final product.

Sample Applications Environmental Testing Chamber Altitude Test Chamber Space Simulation Test Chamber Thermal Shock Chamber Aerospace & Aeronautical Engineering Test Chamber High Altitude Flight Component Testing Vacuum Oven Vacuum Freeze Drying Plastic & Epoxy Curing & Outgassing About Aerospace and Aeronautical Engineering Simulation: Many industries need to design, test, and validate parts, components, and electronics that can operate under variable pressure and temperature. Aerospace and aeronautical engineers must design components that can handle the pressure changes of takeoff, landing, and cruising at high altitude and temperature swings from the freezing temperatures experienced in the upper atmosphere to the heat of a jet engine. Many aircraft components must be able to survive emergency situations such as rapid decompression at altitude inside a pressurized cabin or compartment, rapid pressurization as the aircraft takes an unexpected dive, or rapidly changing temperatures and pressures found in storm systems. The automotive industry must make cars that can drive at any livable altitude and environment, from the Death Valley desert in the summer to the Oymyakon Road in winter. Medical respirators and other devices must perform at ground level and in life-flight airplanes and helicopters. Even consumer electronics, such as cell phones and laptop computers, must be able to handle being placed in an unregulated cargo bay during a trans-oceanic passenger flight. Ideal Vacuum’s ExploraVAC MAX Aerospace, Aeronautical Engineering, and Environmental TVAC thermal vacuum testing chambers deliver precise pressure and altitude control from local elevation to 280,000 ft with a chamber pressurization rate of 10 Torr per second, which is faster pressurization that an object feels at terminal-velocity free-fall in the earth’s atmosphere and sufficient for most ASTM and MIL-STD rapid pressurization standards. It also has a maximum simulate rate of rise of 22,500 feet per minute which is sufficient for commercial aircraft flight simulations. The heated and cooled platen allows precise sample temperature control at controlled heating rates of up to 10 °C per minute, sufficient for thermal shock standards. An internally regulated purge port accepts a user-selected gas input at pressures up to 250 PSIG. These features allow the user full control of pressure, temperature, and atmospheric composition to simulate virtually any terrestrial environment. Smaller chamber sizes and/or greater pumping speeds are available to meet MIL-STD-810-G rapid decompression standards or to simulate military aircraft or rocket takeoffs. Smaller chambers also provide proportionally faster cooling speeds. Even faster and deeper cooling, down to -170 °C, is possible with our XtremeFreez recirculated liquid nitrogen cooling option.

Sample Applications Environmental Testing Chamber Altitude Test Chamber Space Simulation Test Chamber Thermal Shock Chamber Aerospace & Aeronautical Engineering Test Chamber High Altitude Flight Component Testing Vacuum Oven Vacuum Freeze Drying Plastic & Epoxy Curing & Outgassing About Vacuum Freeze-Drying: Freeze-drying, also called lyophilization or cryodesiccation, is the process of removing water and other liquids from a sample below the freezing point of the water or other liquid by sublimation. Because the sample is fully solid during the drying process, its shape and inner geometry can be maintained down to the cellular or microscopic level. While home and commercial freeze dryers are most often associated with food preservation, laboratory freeze dryers are often used by the pharmaceutical industry to preserve medicines in a lightweight and highly soluble form or to preserve live viruses and bacteria cultures commonly used in vaccines. Freeze-drying is also used to prepare culture or tissue samples for water-free imaging and microscopy techniques, such as electron microscopy. Small particles, such as nanotubes, which cannot be removed from a liquid suspension by filtration or evaporation without undesirable aggregate formation can be purified by freeze-drying. Most laboratory freeze dryers utilize a sample cooling compartment and a cold collector array to capture water and solvent vapors. This protects the vacuum pump from damage but also introduces a liability of incomplete drying if the collector becomes saturated. Ideal Vacuum’s ExploraVAC MAX Advanced Freeze Dryer TVAC thermal vacuum system avoids this liability by utilizing a chemical-resistant, oil-free dry scroll pump to allow continuous, collector-free, freeze-drying. For basic freeze-drying applications, the system’s platen with cascade-refrigerated circulating coolant can operate as low as -70 °C. For more advanced applications, where annealing or secondary drying is required, the platen can be heated which allows precise temperature control up to 400 °C. The freeze-drying system can be further upgraded with a liquid nitrogen cooling system capable of achieving sample temperatures as low as -170 °C, turbomolecular pumping to achieve vacuum pressures as low as 1 × 10-7 Torr for even faster freeze-drying, and liquid nitrogen cooled trapping to prevent highly corrosive or toxic gases from escaping the system.

Sample Applications Environmental Testing Chamber Altitude Test Chamber Space Simulation Test Chamber Thermal Shock Chamber Aerospace & Aeronautical Engineering Test Chamber High Altitude Flight Component Testing Vacuum Oven Vacuum Freeze Drying Plastic & Epoxy Curing & Outgassing About Space Simulation: The conditions felt in space are extreme. Satellites, CubeSats, and spacecraft experience constant high vacuum and large temperatures swings during the day-night cycle as they pass into the suns unfiltered rays and then into the earth’s cold shadow. For example, an object in low earth orbit without temperature regulation mechanisms may reach -170 °C in the night and 123 °C in the day. Due to the high cost of launching an object into space, it is crucial, and often mandatory, to rigorously test all individual components and the entire assembled device before deployment. Ideal Vacuum’s ExploraVAC MAX Advanced Space Simulation Test Chamber has a 24” cubic chamber which can fit most individual components, a small commercial satellite, or a12U CubeSat. A built-in Pfeiffer HiPace 300 turbomolecular pump delivers pressures down to 1 × 10-7 Torr to effectively simulate deep space. This matches most space simulation requirements and far exceeds the standard CubeSat testing requirement of 1 ×10-3 Torr. The high surface area 23” × 23” heated and cooled platen allow precise sample temperature control from -70 °C to 400 °C with ramp rate and setpoint control accurate to ± 0.3 °C. The chamber walls heat to 140 °C independent of platen temperature allowing the chamber to be baked out to achieve deeper high vacuum at a faster rate, clean the chamber between outgas composition tests, and provide radiant heating for thermal gradient tests. These extreme temperatures allow light-shadow thermal temperature cycling tests or thermal vacuum outgassing tests. A spacious LF-200 side port is available for user-selected or designed accessories, such as an electronic feedthrough for device monitoring or shock testing, an infrared lamp array for radiant heating or temperature differential tests, or an ultraviolet lamp array for ionizing radiation tests. The system can be further upgraded with pressure control if the objects being tested may experience variable pressures on their way to space. A purge gas line can be added to improve system cleanliness and purity by introducing clean inert gas into the chamber after each vacuum cycle. Faster and deeper cryogenic cooling, down to -170 °C, is possible with the recirculated liquid nitrogen cooling option to simulate even colder space temperatures or thermal shock.

ExploraVAC MAX Advanced Universal Vacuum Test Chamber System, With 24 Inch Cubic Welded Aluminum Chamber, Heated and Cooled 23 x 23 inch Platen, Chamber Wall Heating, Turbo Pump, and Chemical Series Dry Scroll Vacuum Pump. The ExploraVAC™ MAX series is Ideal Vacuum’s premier TVAC thermal test chamber product line, which includes many additional features compared to our standard ExploraVac instruments. This is our Advanced Universal Process ExploraVAC MAX TVAC thermal vacuum test chamber system, the ultimate environmental simulation system. It offers heated and cooled sample temperature control from -70 to +400 °C, accurate to ± 0.3 °C, on a 23” × 23” high-surface-area thermally isolated platen. It is a fully integrated, turnkey, rough vacuum system featuring a fully enclosed, lighted, cubic 24” inch, welded, 6061-T6 aluminum vacuum chamber and door with viewport, dual ISO LF-200 side ports, and a volume of 8.0 cubic feet. The system includes a Pfeiffer HiPace 300 turbomolecular pump to achieve ultimate pressures as low as 10-7 Torr, and an Edwards nXDS20iC chemical series dry scroll vacuum pump which quickly removes oxygen and air to degas materials while withstanding organic vapors and avoiding contaminating chemical products or polymer resin with oil mist. This pump can pump condensable vapors (if the gas ballast is opened - see pump manual). This Advanced Universal Process system with the dry pump alone has full pressure control from local pressure to 2 × 10-2 Torr accurate to the measured gauge value. For altitude simulation, the system has a ceiling of 280,000 feet. When the chamber is crossed over and pumped by the turbomolecular vacuum pump, its pressure simulates that of deep space, in the 10-7 Torr range and can degas materials even at cryogenic temperatures. This system could be customized to obtain any desired rate of rise by adding additional vacuum pumps mounted outside the cabinet. Chamber venting is controlled by our smart Ideal Vacuum CommandValve™, which allows chamber pressurization at rates of up to 10 Torr per second, which is more rapid pressurization than an object feels in free fall. The operator can select preferred pressure units in Altitude, Torr, Atmospheres, Bar, Pascals, or PSI. The chamber is fitted with wall heaters to bake out and self-clean any residue that may build up inside the chamber. The wall heaters produce a maximum wall heating rate of 2 degrees per minute up to 140°C, accurate to ± 1.5 °C, independent of the platen temperature. In other cases, due to lack of space or funds, a single system must act as a universal testing or process system. For example, an academic aerospace engineering lab may wish to have a single test chamber for performing altitude simulation, environmental testing, and space simulation to qualify all their experimental aircraft, spacecraft, and CubeSat parts and devices. A materials synthesis laboratory may wish to have a single vacuum chamber capable of pyrolyzing, freeze-drying, and degassing nanotubes under high vacuum or measuring mechanical properties at varying temperatures and pressures of a promising new lightweight polymer. Ideal Vacuum’s ExploraVAC MAX Advanced Universal Test Chamber System can meet any of these needs. For even faster and deeper cryogenic cooling (down to -170 °C), our XtremeFreez recirculating liquid nitrogen cooling option allows simulation of even colder space temperatures or for thermal shock testing.
