Mechanical Engineers For Spectroscopy Product Development
Introduction:
Ideal Vacuum and Ideal Spectroscopy are looking for mechanical design engineers to join our team to support vacuum and optical device development. Successful applicants for this position will have SolidWorks modeling experience, drafting skills, and an understanding of how to design for manufacturing. Additional experience working with laser optics, complex research assemblies, and optical ray tracing software packages, such as Zemax OpticsStudio, is desired but not mandatory. The design engineers hired for these positions will work closely with the principal investigator and other chief engineers.
Background
An active and growing field of research and development is in the extreme ultraviolet (XUV) and vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) wavelength regions of the spectrum, 10 to 100 nm and 100 to 200 nm, respectively. Ideal Vacuum and Ideal Spectroscopy, are excited to work together to develop products that will assist research groups who are setting up experiments to study the science and physics of atoms and molecules with optical transitions in these regions. It is a perfect intersection for our two companies to collaborate because XUV and VUV radiation are quickly absorbed by molecules in air and not transmit through the atmosphere. Ideal Vacuum has a well-established product line of Ideal Vacuum Cubes to which we will add additional products and accessories so customers can quickly build these types of experimental setups.
Areas Of Product Development
- XUV and VUV vacuum-tight waveguide assemblies
- Vacuum grade optic mounts and translation stage assemblies
- Vacuum Cube plates with integrated 45° mirror mounts
- Fluorescence light collection optical assemblies
- Cube Plate to photodetectors assemblies, like PMTs, photodiodes, and infrared detectors (InGaAs, PbS, PbSe, HgCdTe)
- Optical arms for Vacuum Cubes to introduce low-scattered laser light
- Supersonic-jet assemblies for generating rotationally cooled molecular beams
- Dual Cube Connections with inner plate skimmers to generate molecular beams
- Cube Kits for VUV, XUV, LIBS, LIF, CARS, CRDS, and DF type experiments
- Cube Kits for VUV and XUV production using high harmonic generation
- Optical assemblies for focusing picosecond and femtosecond laser beams inside krypton or argon gas cells and jets.
- VUV and XUV monochromator kits with gratings, motor controls, and our AutoAcquir spectroscopy software.
Responsibilities
After completing on-job training, an engineer at Ideal Vacuum is:
- Self-directed in assigned projects, with supervisor support
- Compliant with Ideal Vacuum procedures and organizational systems
- A valuable, contributing member of the product development team
- Able to coordinate and steward resources to meet timelines and milestones
- Involved in multiple project phases from product definition to product deployment
Education/Knowledge
- B.S. Mechanical Engineering + 3 years of mechanical design experience
- SolidWorks CAD
- Blueprints and machine drawings
- Design For Manufacturing (DFM)
- Experience with Zemax OpticStudio is desired but not manditory
- PDM systems
Job Tasks
As a design team member at Ideal Vacuum and Ideal Spectroscopy, a mechanical engineer is responsible to complete assigned projects, in addition to contributing to team efforts when needed. Engineers provide verbal or written progress reports to their supervisor on assigned projects. The following items are common work activities for a mechanical engineer at Ideal Vacuum:
- SolidWorks 3D modeling
- Conceptual design and product prototyping
- Creating production drawings and documentation
- Interacting with machinists, fabricators, and assemblers
- Support of project-related manufacturing and assembly
Pay & Benefits:
